Young children, around four or five, do very well with musical games, songs, rhythm activities, and simple instruments. Formal guitar lessons usually work best from about seven to eight years old, because most kids then have enough finger strength, coordination, and focus to handle a small guitar and follow a lesson plan.


That said, every child develops differently. At G4 Guitar Schools Adelaide, we have a Young Beginner course for kids aged 4 to 6 years old. For those younger players, lessons focus on fun skill-building tasks that lead into proper guitar technique as they grow. Start early if the child is keen, but keep it playful. That’s the secret to lasting interest.

No, it is never too late. Plenty of adults begin playing in their twenties, fifties, or later, and make steady, rewarding progress. Learning guitar as an adult brings mental stimulation, a creative outlet, and a way to unwind after work.
Our adult lessons break skills into clear, manageable steps. Instructors move at a pace that suits you, with patient, encouraging guidance. You do not need prior experience or “natural talent,” just a willingness to learn. Many adult students say the best part is being able to play songs they enjoy and meet like-minded people along the way.

We highly recommend that you have a guitar before you begin your guitar journey. We recommend that you begin with a nylon-string guitar. The recommended sizing is below for the age groups:

  • 3-5 years: 1/4 Size
  • 5-8 years: 1/2 Size
  • 8-12 years: 3/4 Size
  • 13 to Adults: Full Size

Our 5-week intro is $249 for the first 5 weeks (includes 5 x 30min lessons plus the G4 Guitar Method booklet). After the first 5 weeks, it is $150 p/m (based on a 4-week month/48-week year).

Both have merits. Acoustic guitars, often with nylon strings for younger players, are gentler on fingers and produce a warm, mellow tone. They suit folk, pop, and classical styles and are a solid choice for children and casual players.


Electric guitars usually have thinner strings and lower action, which means less finger pressure is needed. They attract teens and adults interested in rock, blues, or heavier sounds. The ability to control volume and add effects makes practice more fun for some learners.

At G4, we recommend starting your journey with an acoustic nylon-string guitar, simply because it is gentler on the fingers. At the end of the day, as long as the guitar has 6 strings and stays in tune, it will be okay to learn on.

The G4 Guitar Method gives a clear, consistent framework built around seven fundamental skills, so students do not miss key areas as they progress. Rather than an ad hoc lesson approach, we break guitar playing into manageable parts, such as rhythm, fretting, tuning, and music theory, and develop each area before moving on.

Unlike many private guitar tutors who teach without a clear structure, the G4 Guitar Method provides a proven step-by-step learning system focused on real progression, accountability, performance, and the development of complete musicianship, not just learning random songs week to week.

The method is designed for Beginner to Intermediate guitarists aged 3 years and above, including adults.

This is a common question we get asked because other tutors are “free flowing” and promote their unorganised approach as “tailoring lessons to the individual student”.

At the beginning of EVERY guitarist’s journey, you must begin with the fundamentals. This is the same process ALL students need to go through. Students must develop the key skills that give them the ability to play all their favourite songs. Working on the 7 essential skills: Picking, Chords, Arpeggios, Scales, Reading Music, Rhythm, Theory/Aural training. It sets the student up for success and helps them learn their favourite songs in less time.

Regular, short practice sessions win every time. Fifteen to twenty minutes most days is far more effective than one long practice a week. Short bursts help build muscle memory, finger strength, and timing, without wearing you out.

Make practice enjoyable. Play songs you like, try a new chord, or focus on one small goal each day. If you are unsure what to practise, your G4 instructor will give a clear, focused plan for your next session.

Using the 5 Junior Levels and 5 Senior Levels, students can track their progress and practice requirements.

We run two studios to serve different parts of Adelaide. Both studios are welcoming, well-equipped, and led by experienced instructors who care about student progress.

  • Mawson Lakes: serving families in the northern and northwestern suburbs.
  • Magill: convenient for the eastern suburbs and nearby districts.

In short, no, we do not. The reason is that we find that exam pressure can put unnecessary strain on students. Students still receive the benefits of success when completing our levels, and we can share with them where they are in relation to AMEB Contemporary Guitar.

Yes, we do! We hold 2 x student showcases per year, which are optional to participate in. We feel it is important to give our students the experience of a LIVE band, so that is what we do. We bring in professional musicians who act as our rhythm section, plus a vocalist to sing the songs which the students perform.
